One of the oldest of its kind in the United States, the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania was established in October 1884, Dr. Rush Shippen Huidekoper serving as its first dean. Jonathan Guest Williams was superintendant at the Westtown Boarding School in Westtown, Chester Co., Pa. from 1881-1891. His oldest son, Charles, was in the first graduating class at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1887. Gerard R. Williams, the donor of this letter, is the great-grandson of Jonathan Guest Williams and in 1966 was director of development at Westtown School.
